Ignis Brand History – the first Italian home appliance brand  

Ignis... 80 years of excellence

 

1940s

Ignis is a Latin term meaning "fire".  Ignis is a brand with a great history.  It is a symbol of positive Italian values and design providing excellent performance and lasting quality.  The Ignis company and brand started in 1943 with Mr. Giovanni Borghi, who created gas cookers to help families during and after WW II during an energy crisis.  He had the vision to create what became one of the most important manufacturers of household appliances relying on the recognized Italian passion for food and family.   

 

1950’s and 1960’s

Ignis products also included refrigerators, freezers and washers.  The factories were in Italy (Cassinetta, Naples, Trento and Siena) and many are still here today.

 

1970’s

 

Ignis becomes the main sponsor of the great Varese basketball team, European champions in 1970, 1972 and 1973,  and the brand becomes very famous.

1974           

Philips in Eindhoven, a Dutch company with its own rich history of innovation and excellent products, acquired Ignis.

1989

Whirlpool Corporation, the world’s leading kitchen and laundry appliance company, acquired Ignis.
